I never used this idea before, but if he had lost he would have been left with 1,000 exactly. Does this work on a common ground? Pot Odds are the better guide i guess, but...

Yea, didn't notice his stats but I would have said you were representing a set... the turn bet was more suspect than the river bet... the guy obviously didn't have a J so the play worked for you.
